The ancient name of Ladakh was Maryul. It is situated between the glacier ranges of mighty Karakoram and the great Himalayas and the outlook of the mountain ranges of Ladakh are red. Therefore the region came to be called as the Maryul. Even today the colours of these mountain ranges are --- red.
According to another hearsay, one of the earliest King of Ladakh Skil Ide Nyimagon his eldest son was Lhachen Palgigon. He on his maiden arrival to Ladakh was told that he would be going to west the land of red clouds that was how Ladakh got its name as Maryul.
That was not so, what it meant was that, during the reign of Tibetan King sRongtsan sGampo, the great Chinese translator Huein Tsang India. He had written his travel accounts very clearly and elaborately. He came to Kulu. He had written that in the north there was Loyul, which with passing time became Lahoal a Tibetan stock.
In the biography of Lostava Rinchen Zangpo, it was mentioned that in Maryul the great vihara of Nyerma, while in Purang the vihara of Tholing and the great vihara of Khatse Gogkhar of Guge, all three viharas were consecrated on the same day.
